NEWS– The Police in Mukono District have arrested their own Assistant Superintendent of Police Tebangole Dismass, 57, attached to the Counter Terrorism Police, VIPPU for allegedly shooting and injuring a Uganda Christian University, Mukono student.
ASP Tebangole allegedly shot Nagayi Natasha, a 21-year-old female student at UCU at around 1:00 a.m on Saturday morning.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire confided to the press that Mukono Police Station received a distress call on 20th May 2023 at around 4:15 a.m regarding a shooting incident that occurred earlier at around 1:00 a.m. in Nabuti Village, Mukono Central Division, Mukono Municipality, Mukono District.
According to the preliminary investigation, it is alleged that on the afore-mentioned date and time, the suspect noticed someone attempting to open his main door. Suspecting a thief, the suspect peeped through the window glass and observed a person using a key to open the door.
In a state of suspicion, the suspect discharged three live bullets through the window glass, hitting Nagayi Natasha on the right chest, near the lower armpit according to Owoyesigyire.
Upon being shot, the victim fell to the ground and cried out for help, asserting that she was not a thief. She specifically mentioned the name Bandishe Ashiraf, one of the tenants residing in the suspect’s residence.
The caretaker of the residence, Ssengendo Hanington, along with other neighbors, responded to the scene. Subsequently, the suspect emerged from his residence.
Owoyesigyire said further investigation revealed that the victim was accompanied by her boyfriend, Bandishe Ashiraf, outside for leisure.
Ashiraf had given her the key to enter the residence and rest while he remained behind. “However, she mistakenly attempted to open the suspect’s room, which is opposite to Ashiraf’s room, leading to the unfortunate shooting incident”.
The victim was transported in critical condition to Kawolo Hospital for immediate medical attention. Ongoing inquiries are being conducted to gather all pertinent details related.
Owoyesigyire said a pistol with 12 rounds of ammunition has been recovered from the police officer whereas the victim who was in critical condition was transported to Kawolo Hospital for medical attention.
The shooting comes hours after a Policeman in Mbarara killed a UPDF soldier after a heated argument. Gun violence by the armed forces is currently the order of the day after Private Sabiiti days ago gunned down Minister Engola at his residence in Kampala.
