Suspected foot and mouth disease outbreak reported in Buliisa

NEWS- The Veterinary officers in Buliisa District are investigating a suspected outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease.

Speaking to the press, the Buliisa District Veterinary officer Dr. Rashid Mubiru disclosed that the suspected cases were registered last week at a livestock farm in the villages of Waiga and Kataleba in Bugana Parish, Buliisa Sub County.

The veterinary officer said he was notified by some cattle keepers after observing some of their animals presenting fever depression, hyper salivation, loss of appetite, weight loss among others.

Dr. Mubiru added that they have so far received reports of suspected Foot and Mouth Disease cases from over five cattle farmers.

According to Mubiru, they have already stopped movements and sale of animals within the sub-county to prevent the spread of the disease, noting that they would take samples of blood for testing the following day.

According to the World Health Organization, Foot and Mouth Disease is a severe highly contagious viral disease of livestock that affects cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and other cloven-hoofed ruminants.
